Fan Expo Denver 2024

Today, let’s kick things off with a trip to Fan Expo Denver, which took place from June 13 to 16, 2024. So, what went down in Denver that’s worth talking about? Imagine a giant anthill of geeks, cosplayers, and fans of all kinds swarming the Colorado Convention Center. It was like a carnival of pop culture, minus the creepy clowns (though, let’s be real, there were probably a few Pennywise cosplayers in the crowd). This year, the event stretched across four days, with packed hours: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the first three days and until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Now, let’s talk about the celebs. The red carpet rolled out for some big names, including Morena Baccarin from Deadpool, Holly Marie Combs, Rose McGowan, and Shannen Doherty from Charmed, and Rainn Wilson from The Office—yep, Dwight Schrute himself. And it doesn’t stop there: Marisa Tomei, unforgettable as Aunt May in Spider-Man, and Antony Starr, our beloved Homelander from The Boys, also made some epic appearances. Plus, for the Once Upon a Time fans, Lana Parrilla added a little bit of magic to the event.

Of course, what’s a convention without cosplay? Fan Expo Denver never disappoints with its cosplay competitions. Attendees brought their A-game with creativity and talent, recreating their favorite characters in ways that defy expectations. Think towering armor, oversized wings, and wigs that defied gravity—pure visual magic. The top costumes strutted their stuff on the Cosplay Red Carpet and entered some seriously intense competitions.

As for panels and workshops, there was something for everyone. From deep dives into the evolution of comics with industry legends to live FX makeup demos and even hands-on workshops for making your own costumes, the schedule was packed. Gamers got their chance to shine in fierce video game tournaments, while anime lovers could geek out at exclusive screenings and meet-and-greets. And the overall vibe? The energy was electric. Between the squeals of excitement over surprise announcements (yes, Keanu Reeves, we saw you!) and the passionate fan convos in line, the whole place buzzed with geeky excitement. The merchandise booths were packed with everything from rare figurines to exclusive art pieces, making every aisle feel like a treasure hunt.

Fan Expo Denver 2024 was a smashing success. A melting pot of pop culture that left attendees with unforgettable memories. Whether you’re a convention veteran or a first-timer, this event had something for everyone. If you missed it, start prepping for next year—it’s only going to get bigger and even more spectacular.

Inside Out 2

For our second segment, let’s dive into the much-anticipated sequel to Inside Out, set to release on June 17. The first film took us inside the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old girl dealing with the upheaval of a cross-country move, as her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust—scrambled to keep her on track. The sequel continues her story as Riley enters adolescence, with new emotions joining the fray, like Love and Jealousy. Think puberty is tricky? Just wait until you see how Riley handles this emotional cocktail.

What’s fascinating about Inside Out is how it illustrates the crucial role each emotion plays in our daily lives. Every one of Riley’s emotions has a job: Joy keeps her happy, Sadness fosters empathy, Fear guards against danger, Anger fights injustice, and Disgust keeps her from being poisoned. Basically, every emotion has a purpose—even Sadness, which, let’s be real, we often try to suppress like an embarrassing relative at a birthday party. Freud probably would’ve loved this movie, with its themes of sublimation and psychic determinism. Riley, for instance, channels her aggressive energy on the hockey field, turning what could be destructive impulses into something positive. It’s Freud’s idea of sublimation in action—taking our most basic drives and using them to achieve something great. And Piaget? He’d likely be impressed with the portrayal of Riley’s cognitive development. Through her emotions, Riley navigates between concrete and formal operations, reflecting her transition into adolescence and the evolution of her logical and abstract thinking. The film perfectly captures that life stage where everything becomes more complicated, more nuanced.

The movie also delivers powerful messages about mental health and accepting all our emotions. When Riley tries to repress her sadness to maintain a happy façade, it only makes things worse. It shows the importance of expressing all emotions—even the negative ones. Essentially, the film is telling us it’s OK to not be OK. And honestly, that’s a message many of us need to hear in a society obsessed with the appearance of perfection. The addition of new emotions in the sequel lets the film explore the increased complexity of teenage emotions. It highlights how our feelings evolve and become more layered as we age, emphasizing the importance of empathy and mutual understanding. Adolescence is basically an emotional battlefield, and the sequel promises to navigate that chaos with the same grace.

One of the key takeaways from Inside Out is that our emotions are interconnected, and it’s normal to feel multiple, even contradictory, emotions at once. Riley learns that she can be both happy and sad, a concept that beautifully reflects the complexity of human experience. It also touches on the idea of "common humanity," reminding us that our emotions and experiences are universal. This emotional duality is often overlooked in mental health discussions, but Inside Out puts it front and center. The movie also shows that emotional support from loved ones is crucial for well-being. The moments where Riley finally shares her sadness with her parents demonstrate how expressing emotions can strengthen bonds and foster healing. In other words, talking about your feelings isn’t just therapeutic—it’s essential for healthy relationships.

Inside Out and its sequel aren’t just animated films. They’re powerful tools for understanding our emotions and opening up conversations about mental health in a way that’s both accessible and deeply moving. These films remind us that all our emotions have value, and accepting them is key to leading a balanced and connected life.

The Impact of Documentaries

For our final segment, let’s dive deep into how documentary series are reshaping our understanding of science. Buckle up, because this one’s going to stir things up!

First off, documentaries don’t just inform—they raise awareness. Take An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore. Before this film, climate change was a niche topic. But then Gore, armed with a giant PowerPoint and a tone of urgency, turned that slideshow into a global call to action. The film not only made millions of people care about climate change, but it also sparked political debates and inspired real-world initiatives to tackle the issue. The documentary succeeded where scientists had been struggling for years: it made climate change personal and urgent.

Documentaries also have the power to radically shift public perceptions and inspire concrete actions. Blackfish is the perfect example of this influence. The film exposed the horrific living conditions of captive orcas at SeaWorld, and the fallout was massive. Visitor numbers plummeted, laws were passed to improve animal welfare in captivity, and SeaWorld eventually ended its orca breeding program. Blackfish didn’t just change minds—it changed laws and corporate practices.

Then there are science documentaries that make the subject not only accessible but downright exciting. Take Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey with Neil deGrasse Tyson. The series uses high-quality animation and clear explanations to make astronomy and physics understandable to the general public. It breaks down complex ideas and makes them gripping. Cosmos isn’t just a science lesson; it’s an invitation to explore the universe and our place within it. It’s inspired countless people to take an interest in science and even sparked some career paths.

But let’s not forget, documentaries also play a vital role in combatting misinformation. The Social Dilemma is a prime example of this fight. The documentary shows how social media manipulates behavior and spreads conspiracy theories. With interviews from former tech insiders, it exposed the creepy mechanisms at work behind our screens and got people thinking critically about their social media habits. The film sparked essential conversations about tech regulation and data privacy.

The influence of documentaries goes beyond individual changes—they can also shape public policy and social movements. Ava DuVernay’s 13th explores the impact of the 13th Amendment on the mass incarceration of African Americans. This documentary has been a driving force in the national conversation on criminal justice reform and helped fuel movements for legislative change. By shining a light on injustice and amplifying marginalized voices, 13th didn’t just educate—it inspired concrete steps towards social reform.

Documentaries also challenge gender and racial stereotypes in science. Media portrayals can shape young people’s aspirations and how they identify with scientific careers. Hidden Figures, although a fictionalized film based on real events, had an impact similar to that of documentaries. It highlighted the crucial contributions of Black women at NASA, inspiring countless young girls to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). This kind of positive representation is key to breaking down stereotypes and encouraging greater diversity in the sciences.

Ultimately, documentaries are powerful engines for change. They educate the public, challenge stereotypes, and inspire action. By raising public awareness and questioning conventional wisdom, documentaries can reshape how we understand the world and how we interact with it. Documentaries aren’t just tools for delivering information—they’re catalysts for thought and social change. They push us to question our beliefs, deepen our understanding of global issues, and take action for a better world. So, the next time you watch a documentary, remember: you’re not just watching a film—you’re engaging your mind in an educational journey that might just change the way you see the world.

Conclusion

And that’s a wrap on our deep dive into the world of pop culture and luxury. After wandering through the packed halls of Fan Expo Denver, dissecting the emotional nuances of Inside Out and its sequel, and exploring the impact of documentary series on how we perceive science, we’re left with one key question: what does all of this tell us about our society? The real question is: how do these events and media shape the way we see the world? Whether it's through celebrating our love for pop culture at massive conventions, delivering life lessons via animated films, or pushing us to think critically through hard-hitting documentaries, these experiences mold our beliefs and behaviors. They remind us that curiosity and critical thinking are powerful tools to navigate an increasingly complex world. So, next time you watch a documentary or attend a fan convention, remember this: these moments of entertainment have a profound impact on our understanding of the world and how we engage with it. They can drive change, spark important discussions, and serve as sources of inspiration.
